I was lucky enough to share a bottle of wine with my zen master last night. Winds raged and temps dropped below 20 degrees in the city, so we stayed in. Perhaps we could meditate in a cave another cold night.
As we talked about time and space, it occurred to me that there are a string of memories from early in the decade which I have a hard time placing chronologically in time. I used to kayak, did you know that? I had this royal blue fiber glass short boat that I'd haul on one shoulder and thrown up on top of my jeep. This is hard for me to admit; the jeep had leopard print seat covers. Bless that little Sarah; it was another life.
The times has a great archive of reader photos from the decade. This one is by Bernard W. Kobes. It's from an anti-war protest in early 2003, right before the US invaded Iraq. My sister and I hit each other a lot when we were little, and this picture really speaks to me. At any given moment, we understand exactly what we need to.

Just back from the Famisans in Newport News, VA. A long relaxing weekend with family and some time to cruise the stripmalls and Colonial Williamsburg. Highlights to come.
Meanwhile, I'm tending to unhappy houseplants and an overgrown kombucha colony.
and now, a little culture:
A terrific short story by Joshua Ferris.
Nite Jewel.

drumroll pls?
We have a new website hot of the presses from the very talented, very co-operative, VERY PATIENT design firm Objective Subject!
Finally, our main page doesn't have the same <--outdated statement about our move [We moved in June, folks. That's six months] and the flower page better describes what we do.
There's still some tweaking to do with content on our end, but that's the beauty of a CMS driven site. We edit it ourselves, from our very own computers. Which means that we can add and subtract all the new small-batch limited edition soaps we're planning for the new year.
And the flower images can be rotated based on season, or whatever I want.

The US will add around 100 million so-called "super-emitters" in the next 40 years. 20-tons of carbon a year is what the average American adds to the atmosphere. So depressing.
I like to sit around and imagine the tipping points switching-off one after another like a set of dominoes. Eat my breakfast and fantasize about the apocalypse.
My friend Jen consoles me by saying that humans have always suffered throughout history. They die or adapt.
What are you going to do, you know? I've been trying to eat meat only once or twice a week. I'm getting up now to turn off some lights. Sigh.
What do you think?

Been playing with kumquats this week. Getting prepped for our January Citus Workshop at LFS University. These photos are from an order for a holiday party - used kumquats, agapanthus, yellow cypress, hinoki cypress, ligurstrum, lucadendron, lisianthus, ranuncula, bronia, and peonies from down under. Smells really good - citrus and cypress. [New soap lightbulb just went off...]
Also been working on photographing all our soaps again for our new website which we're launching tomorrow (fingers crossed). Here's the Lemon Geranium.

This morning it seems my google mail account has been hacked by someone or thing intent on selling stupid shit on the internet. And I feel like someone beat me up. Maybe because we've been working in a studio that averages 48 degrees. Which is where I have to go now. To said cold SAIPUA. But we'll be decorating for Christmas today. Fist pump. I'm going to get 3 hot chocolates.
ps, we're teaching Nea to jump rope.

Working like a slave from home today. Do you understand how good smoked trout and horseradish and cucumber on finn crisp is? You don't do you.
I'm on a Cocteau Twins binge lately, and today it makes me miss my muse.
Wow, I didn't realize I have such a cute outfit on today.

[photos from Nicolette, except the photo of Nicolette which I took in the Poinsettia house at Peace Tree]
Nicolette, Amy and I went on a road trip to Philadelphia on BUSINESS! We managed to see some achingly beautiful heirloom begonias* at Peace Tree Farm (thanks Stephanie and Lloyd!), visit Terrain, ogle in the WAGNER FREE INSTITUTE, swim in a hot tub, and eat candy and milkshakes!
* you can read more about my recent begonia infatuation in my latest d*s post here.
