hot pot

it's been a rough couple of weeks. i still run into people around the neighborhood who enthusiastically shout at me across the street: "HOW WAS ICELAND!?!?!?"

I murmur expletives and quickly hobble in the other direction, my hair suddenly a little more frazzeled, my gait taking on a bit of a witches limp. Oy vey.

Fact is, Iceland feels like 3 years ago. The chaos of September hit hard and fast as soon as we got back. As I sit here digging my way out of estimates, paperwork and unresolved new soap packaging I remember this natural hot spring we found near Patreksfjordor. It was farther away from everything and anything you could ever imagine. It was like being at the edge of the world.

that's all.

actually that's not all - remember my vetiver soap? the one that was all done and figured out? a certain set of chocolate crafting siblings went ahead and bought out all the paper i needed to release it for fall 2010. so we're back to the drawing board. i should get a candy bar or something for my trouble.

Porcelain Vine

IMG_8735

i gave up superlatives a long time ago. they're so contrived and boring! i pride myself on changing my mind frequently - and, on a dime*

IMG_8733

asking a florist about favorite flowers is just insensitive. how would i possibly choose? as a sister , I remember asking my mother who she liked better. over and over again waiting for her answer. it's sort of a similar scenario.

IMG_8722

nicolette and I had the favorite flower showdown last year over the course of three weeks and countless arguments and emails. it came down to three choices and an if-you-had-to-choose-stuck-on-a-desert-island sort of ultimatum...any guesses?

but here, the topic of my note to you; porcelain vine. today, this week - FOR NOW my favorite thing. it boggles my mind - the color, the speckles i almost can't stand it. in fact I hoard it. all wound up in a black plastic garbage bag in the cooler. yesterday i finally let it out.

...and everyone who has stopped by when we're trying to get a wedding out the door. Apparently I can be rather rude when I've got 3 6-foot arrangements get into a rental van. Oy vey. It's been a rough week.

Lena Corwin's new Lines and Shapes book project is called "Brooklyn Diary" and Saipua is one of the features. It's going to be dope partially because Nidhi took some of the photos. You can pre-order it here.

Say you will.

Some things from old days. I am eating a Scuttlebutt right now, and if you don't know what that is, I pity you.

eric brought home a judee sill album a few weeks ago and it's been on my mind to tell you ever since. i listen to it every morning quietly on the computer before he gets up. it sounds better on vinyl though.

I have a new computer, and by the miracle of TIME MACHINE it looks now just like my old one, minus the cracks and chocolate smears, minus half my Iceland photos and some good flower footage, gone forever to the void of theft. Anyway I am typing away on it - have been since 7:30 this morning, Vacation with a capital V seems like an distant idea I had. The phone rings and I ignore it.

The question that possesses my attention this very minute is not whether I'll ever get through 300+ emails, but whether it is a good idea - a good, kosher idea - to eat half my burrito from yesterday at 9:34 am.

Above are some pictures I took back in the spring for the August issue of Food and Wine. Dahlias, black basil, ranunculus, scabiosa, fritillaria and some little violets... I'm now off to collect remnants from Saturday's wedding. It feels exactly like a Monday should.

THEFT IN RED HOOK!

Dearest readers,

Dawn breaks on another wedding Saturday. I'm sitting here at 6:52 drinking coffee typing on Eric's computer at home to you out there reading ... what am I going to say next? It's hard to be clever at 6:53 ...

My friends I have to convey grave news, brace yourselves. My computer (and another shop laptop have been stolen) from our shop yesterday along with a drawer of cash. My little smudgy laptop with it's case cracks at the surface where wrist meets mac-plastic, with it's wonderfully crammed desktop and all my Saipua secrets - often held just beyond a spinning rainbow beachball.

I wish I had been coming back from lunch with Nea just as the fucker was sneaking out, she could have launched right for his balls and I would have kicked him in the face and told him to call his mother or something. I assume of course it was a man but you never know. This is no time for political correctness. MY ICELAND PHOTOS!

Fortunately we have an incredible IT guy (again, is there ever the IT-girl?) who just last week set us all up to automatically back up remotely to some sort of information rainbow cloud. We'll see if the last backup was after I uploaded 3000 photographs of moss covered hills and magic icelandic ponies.

I should go finish some flowers at the shop. I made the coffee too strong and it's bitter.

Till soon, all yours -
Sarah

iceberg

back from Iceland...stopping in quick to tell you that dope shit like this exists in nature and I have seen it with mine own eyes.
