One thing you may not know about me is that I'm into space. Like, outer space.
I also like my space which is another topic for another day.
Last night I came to the apartment in the city. I came in late because I had been out around collecting plants and things all day, preparing for our giant house plant sale on Sunday. After I unloaded the truck, and by the time I went and got my box of arugula and olives and whatnot it was already 9:30 or so.
I started reading about the current land rover that is exploring Mars. And then I brushed up on my knowledge of Mariner and Voyager. It's fun to close my eyes and really try to imagine what it would be like to be inside Voyager right now. Crossing the heliopause and entering interstellar space. Headed nowhere in the abyss at 17 kilometers per second. That would be the loneliest place I can imagine.
If I wasn't a florist, I'd like to be lots of other things like a spy or an astronaut. I think I'd be good at both because I really like stressful situations and I work well under pressure. I'd be the person you'd want on a spaceship in trouble, trust me! No drama, just getting it done.
I've been teaching a lot lately, both with Nicolette at the Little Flower School and privately through Saipua. I love doing this, watching people experience the excitement of getting it, when the flowers work together suddenly and sing. Tis the season for corporate work too, and we've had our hands full. I like corporate work because it can be simpler and more straight forward...you put the lime in the coconut sort of work. Well, simpler for me because I'm usually not around for it -- Asheley and Deanna have been running that show. Pretty damn well I might say.
Just so we're clear, if we're on a spaceship and the alarms are all going off and flashing red everywhere, I can handle the situation but Asheley and Deanna have to be there too, OK? (Eric can't be there because he has to be home chasing sheep.)
The other thing I have been reading a lot about is the news from the big telescope at the south pole that scientists have detected microwaves that could be proof of inflation at the beginning of the universe. Which affirms the big bang and the expanding universe. (and also, hello? MICROWAVE trend alert!!) When I was little I would lie in bed and think about the edge of the universe and try to think about what was beyond that edge. It would make me very uncomfortable. Now it is a sort exercise to get me out of my head stuff.
Like when someone anonymously writes a comment that my blog has gotten too 'whiny' instead of lashing out and responding with 'go fuck yourself' I can just go to the edge of the universe for a while, where nothing really matters.
Maybe I can audit some physics classes somewhere.

Quantum physics can be quite comforting, I find, for existential anxiety.
I just read a book called The Martian--about an astronaut stuck on Mars. It's an easy read and strangely compelling.
This free online course about the "Greatest Unsolved Mysteries of the Universe" starts today: http://bit.ly/1dn7C9C
seriously? your blog is the most honest, authentic and beautiful of all that i read. favorite.
You are singing my song. I have a farm, I have a large sheep herd, I have gardens, I host and sell antiques a antique and garden sale at my farm... To top it off I have been hosting weddings and doing flowers to pay for all the projects that need done on this place. I try to blog to market myself, but I believe in writing and posting original content. ( which it seems like you get). What comments do I get??? Why aren't you blogging? Are you doing anything? Why is your sale only one day and not two days? Why are you having it on Friday and not Saturday? I can't come that day....after the winter and the lambing...geez I don't know what I've been doing. Maybe I should just repost Pinterest and Tumbler photos everyday like other blogs....hang in...the weather will make everything seem better ...be proud you are posting your own thing and not recycling fluff for the masses. Sermon over.
Your blog isn't whiny / whiney / winey at all. I think its funny and honest. I live for it.
Watch the elegant universe!
Watch the new Cosmos when you have some spare moments! It's pretty excellent.
Your blog is real life and I appreciate it/need it so so much. You have a deeply honest voice. <3
You are never whiny...ever! More along the lines of brilliant & true, I think!
i'm with ariel: neil de grass tyson. i'll be back to hear what you have to say about your time with him!
Heliopause. Wow. I wish I had a reason to use that word in a sentence.
I think studying physics would bring a new dimension to your arrangements and having done arrangements would bring an interesting dimension to your study of physics.
Well... you kind of do whine in your blogs sometimes, but it's honest and entertaining and I really enjoy it.
God this work is gorgeous. The purple arrangement at the start and that red flower (is that a poppy or an anemone? My eyes suck) are mind-blowing. So good, so so good! I feel like that first photo might make a great color palette for the next outfit I sew. I'm hooked on making insanely luxurious and impractical children's clothing of late. No kids, just the clothes. Dresses lined in silk, hand embroidery, ridiculous historic applique. I just love craft and small scale.
I bet you could find a MOOC (Massive Online O-something-I-forget Course - they're free!) on physics and take all the joy and mystery out of it, if you wanted ;)
Oh! I finally finished that portrait of Nea that you gave me permission to do ... last year? Two years ago? I can't keep track of time (really, isn't our measure of time irrelevant at the edge of the universe, anyway?). Feel free to cruise by my blog if you'd like to check it out. There are parts of it I like, parts of it I hate. I'd love to paint Nea again, if you'd be game for letting me use your photos again. I adore her. She's such a great dog, such a great subject. ANd painting fur is a real bitch and I need to challenge myself more! =)
How beautiful! and the pictures are lovely
hahah okay, I will do it for you: Whoever wrote that comment about whining, GO FUCK YOURSELF!!
But in all seriousness, don't change a thing, I come here to read you and your take on this world which is raw and honest and not all Pollyanna-ed up like so much of the blog world. Don't. Change.
Much love and heart and godspeed to the edge of the universe <3
Hi! Could you share the details of the plant sale? Is it open to the public? Thanks!
Popped over after hearing about you on a Design Sponge podcast. This is a brilliant post, the second last paragraph is magic!!
Space is awesome. Flower… awesome too.
Fabulous collection of flowers. Very happy to find your blog. Thank you for sharing with us. Myrtle Beach Real Estate
This was the first post of yours ever that I didn't look at the pictures until I was done reading. weird.
I used to imagine the end of the universe when I was a child as well. I don't think it made uncomfortable as much as it sort of blew my mind - that there could be a boundary line to infinity.
If you haven't already, you should watch "The Europa Report". It was better than Gravity.
The great Carl Sagan once said, "Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam." He forgot to say every Florist, but whatever...mote of dust in a sunbeam.
This is a really neat blog, I'm subscribing to the RSS feed ASAP.
well, if you won't tell them to fuck off then I will. if it's too whiny for you then go away, anonymous. please don't change your blog is the best.
Your blog is not whiney, the anonymous poster is whiney....your blog is amazing don't change a thing!
The cool thing about your blog, is it's yours!!! Whine away my dear! Or wine, whatever!!!
Love you, love the blog!!
Monica
I love the headpiece!
Love this & i think maybe a business owners prerogative after many years..:) (Apparently I frighten clients by saying weird shit at inappropriate times, or hanging up on them).
